What's the difference?

A MANUAL Car has three pedals manual foot controlsand a manual gemanual transmission cararbox

  • CLUTCH
  • BRAKE
  • ACCELARATOR

The way you make a manual car move is to locate the "bite" bitting point of the clutch (which is located roughly three quarters of the way up,whilst at the same time pushing down very slightly on the accelerator, this how you get the car to move when in gear. You also need to use the clutch to change gears,to do this you simply push the clutch to floor of the car, change gear,. then release the clutch. You will also need to use the clutch when braking to stop the car,as just before you bring the car to a full stop you will have to push the clutch completely down. When on a upward hill, before you move of ,you must have the car sitting on the bite of the clutch, if you are above the biting point the car will jump forward or stall,if you are below the biting point of the clutch, the car will roll backwards (not good when you have cars behind you lol).

A AUTOMATIC Car has two pedals anAutomatic Transmission Carsd a aautomatic foot controlsutomatic gearbox

  • BRAKE
  • ACCELARATOR

Basically one pedal the "accelerator" to go (ie move the car),and another pedal the "brake" to slow down or stop the car.You still have a gear box on a Automatic car with which you use the "gears stick" to select if you want to go forward or reverse, push to D=drive and as you accelerate only, the car will move forward, want to go faster? push down more ,want to slow down? take some pressure of the accelerator, or if you need to reverse pull the "gearstick up to R=reverse.same as with drive the more/less pressure applied to the accelerator the faster or slower the car moves. The Automatic cannot stall or roll back even when on steep hill.

Common reasons why pupils decide to learn in an automatic

  • Believe it to be easier
  • Lack confidence in their ability to drive
  • Wanting to get through the learning process quicker
  • Short legs for the pedals
  • Previous instructor advised to try
  • Struggles with clutch control
  • Struggles with gears
  • Has an automatic sat in the drive
  • Has disabilities and has no choice

All of our pupils that where advised by a previous instructor to try the Automatic have never went back to a manual ,as they found it so much easier and learned everything a lot quicker without having to worry about gears/clutch control/stalling.

If you are having some difficulties with the Manual ,why not go out in the Automatic for a one hour driving lesson and see what you think.
